Reporting and context

U.S. Ambassador Ronald Johnson welcomed the arrest of Bojun He, known as “El Chino,” after a Mexico City raid in which authorities seized cash valued at more than 43 million pesos. According to Tribuna Sonora, federal prosecutors are investigating the Chinese-born naturalized Mexican citizen for suspected money laundering.

Federal and capital authorities searched an apartment in the Miguel Hidalgo borough under a court order on November 4. The operation involved the Navy, federal Security Ministry, federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) and Mexico City police, following intelligence gathering and surveillance.

Tribuna Sonora reported that officers seized 26.976 million pesos and US$920,000, which the report valued together at 43.72 million pesos. They also took phones, documents, immigration credentials, drug doses, ammunition, a digital scale and a money-counting machine. Two vehicles, a Jeep Grand Cherokee and a Land Rover Defender, and luxury watches were seized while investigators examined the origin of the funds.

Authorities identify He as the suspected leader of a money-laundering network linked to members of La Unión Tepito. The investigation points to financial and business contacts extending to Tijuana and Cancún, as well as suspected extortion of merchants, human smuggling and arms trafficking. The outlet also reported possible business links involving people of Asian origin and an alleged prior criminal record in China for forgery and money laundering. He obtained Mexican citizenship on September 26, 2025.

In a November 6 post on X cited by Tribuna, Johnson described the arrest as a significant step against a structure associated with money laundering, extortion and human trafficking. He emphasized targeting the financial networks and proceeds supporting criminal organizations.

He was placed in the custody of federal prosecutors with the seized money and property. The FGR investigation remains open to determine his legal status, the suspected network’s reach and whether others were involved.
