Reporting and context
Mexico's federal Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch said the Attorney General's Office will decide whether to investigate alleged links between businessman Amílcar Olán and recently arrested Jalisco New Generation Cartel figure Iván Cazarín Molina, known as “El Tanque.”
According to Harfuch, authorities are aware of a 2024 audio recording that allegedly indicates a relationship between Olán's brother, Luis Alberto Olán Aparicio, and Cazarín. The recording reportedly includes claims that the relationship was used to stop extortion against a ballast supplier. Harfuch said the recording is currently the information authorities have about Amílcar Olán and that any decision on additional investigations belongs to the FGR.
El Diario de Juárez reported that Cazarín had been sought since 2015 after a May helicopter attack in which military personnel and federal police officers were killed. Harfuch said Cazarín is detained in connection with alleged fuel-tax fraud, extortion, homicide and unlawful deprivation of liberty, and is also wanted by the U.S. government for other offenses. He described Cazarín as a regional leader linked to Tabasco, Oaxaca, Puebla and Veracruz, while the investigation and the allegations remain subject to the authorities' determinations.
