What happened

CBP says officers recovered more than 886 pounds of liquid methamphetamine in 22 buckets after inspecting a truck at Calexico’s commercial crossing on October 22.

Reporting and context

U.S. Customs and Border Protection says officers seized more than 886 pounds of liquid methamphetamine concealed in a truck’s fuel tank at the Calexico commercial port of entry. The agency’s November 5 release describes an October 22 inspection; the seizure was not reported as having happened on the release date.

According to CBP, a U.S. citizen driving an empty 2016 Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer sought entry into the United States and was referred for a secondary inspection. Officers noticed discoloration in the fuel tank and tested a liquid sample, which the agency says was positive for methamphetamine.

CBP reports removing 22 five-gallon buckets of liquid from the tank. Punto Norte also covered the seizure, describing the truck’s crossing from Mexicali to Calexico and reporting that the driver and vehicle were detained for processing. Neither account names the driver or identifies a cartel responsible for the shipment. The reported weight does not establish the substance’s purity or a retail value.
