FGR reports 59 million liters of fuel found
Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office reported finding more than 59 million liters of gasoline and diesel during an investigation into possible fuel-smuggling networks in Guanajuato. Authorities are still determining the fuel’s origin, ownership and traceability.
The Attorney General’s Office found more than 59 million liters of gasoline and diesel whose ownership and traceability have not been established during an investigation into possible fuel-smuggling networks in Guanajuato, Hoy Tamaulipas reported.
The investigation began July 3, 2026, after authorities detained a person who was allegedly unloading fuel from a tanker carrying 33,000 liters of diesel at a gas station in San Luis de la Paz. The FGR said the person could not document the fuel’s traceability, leading federal prosecutors to seek search warrants. Searches were conducted at the gas station, an LPG distribution facility in Dolores Hidalgo and another property in San José Iturbide. Authorities seized seven transport vehicles, 10 large cylindrical containers and accounting documents at the last location.
According to Hoy Tamaulipas, the FGR identified the seized fuel as 33,504,067.406 liters of regular gasoline, 7,266,813.6174 liters of premium gasoline and 18,265,989.504 liters of diesel. The agency said the investigation remains open to determine the fuel’s origin and whether hydrocarbon offenses or violations of the Federal Tax Code occurred. Any potential liability will depend on whether those involved can prove ownership and traceability of the fuel, authorities said.
