Sonora fraud rate rises to 8,872 cases per 100,000 residents
El Sol de Hermosillo reports that Sonora’s fraud rate rose sharply in 2025 while extortion declined but remained among the state’s highest-incidence crimes, according to Inegi’s Envipe 2026.
Fraud reached its highest rate on record in Sonora in the 2026 National Survey of Victimization and Perception of Public Safety (Envipe), rising to 8,872 reported offenses per 100,000 residents in 2025 from 6,407 the previous year. According to El Sol de Hermosillo, the increase was 2,465 offenses per 100,000 residents, or about 38.5 percent, and exceeded the national rate of 8,290.
Extortion moved in the opposite direction, falling in Sonora from 7,844 cases per 100,000 residents in 2024 to 5,106 in 2025, a decline of about 34.9 percent. El Sol de Hermosillo reported that extortion nevertheless remained one of the state’s highest-incidence crimes, second only to fraud among the main indicators in the survey.
The Inegi survey estimated 656,980 crimes in Sonora during 2025. Victims were present in 42.8 percent of those cases, or 281,337 incidents; among those, 12.2 percent involved physical aggression, down from 20.3 percent in 2024, although Inegi said the change was not statistically significant.
The survey also found that 83.7 percent of the estimated crimes caused some form of harm to victims. Economic damage accounted for 56 percent, followed by emotional or psychological harm at 31 percent and physical or work-related harm at 6.2 percent. In incidents where victims were present, 70.2 percent involved one offender, 15.3 percent involved two, and 11 percent involved three or more.
