Trump demands Mexican action against alleged cartel collaborators

U.S. President Donald Trump is demanding that Mexico take stronger action against public officials who, he said, collaborate with drug-trafficking organizations, according to a memorandum sent to Congress and reported by Noticaribe.
The annual presidential memorandum identifies the main countries involved in illicit drug production or transit, and Mexico remains on the list. Trump said Mexico’s current investment in its security forces is insufficient to maintain and expand operations against cartels, their financial structures and criminal networks. He called on the Mexican government to identify, arrest and prosecute officials accused of corruption and collaboration with criminal groups, and urged stronger inspections at ports of entry.
The memorandum also recognizes actions by President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration, including drug seizures, the destruction of clandestine laboratories and the deployment of additional security forces, Noticaribe reported. Trump cited bilateral cooperation in the operation that resulted in the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” the reported leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. Noticaribe said the U.S. pressure adds a new point of tension to the security relationship, as Mexico’s government continues to insist that cooperation with Washington must respect national sovereignty and avoid intervention in domestic affairs.
