249 kilograms of drugs seized at Otay crossing
ZETA Tijuana reports that authorities detained a man after finding about 249 kilograms of drugs, including cocaine and fentanyl, in a truck’s double bottom at the Otay border crossing.
A man was detained at the Otay border crossing after authorities found about 249 kilograms of drugs, mainly cocaine, and at least 10 packages of fentanyl hidden in a truck’s double bottom, according to ZETA Tijuana. The seizure was reported by federal authorities on Saturday, Sept. 26, after the vehicle crossed the X-ray equipment at the Baja California checkpoint a day earlier.
ZETA Tijuana reported that the canine team led by “Chocolate” detected the concealed compartment. Customs personnel, the Defense Ministry, the National Guard and the federal Security and Citizen Protection Ministry found 195 packages during the inspection. The man, the truck and the drugs were placed at the disposal of the appropriate authorities, and the source identified the detainee as Juan Alberto Díaz Sánchez, 46.
The report said Díaz Sánchez remains in custody under mandatory pretrial detention after a judge declared his arrest lawful. It also noted that “Chocolate” detected 76 kilograms of cocaine at the same Otay customs facility on Sept. 4, a separate seizure that illustrates the dog’s recent role in checkpoint inspections.
