Reporting and context

Officers in Durango city interrupted an attempted telephone extortion against a 20-year-old woman whose callers demanded 10,000 pesos and threatened her family, according to Notigram. The callers claimed to belong to an organized crime group.

Fernanda “N” received the call while at the Coppel store in the Paseo Durango shopping center. Frightened by the threats, she approached members of the Interinstitutional Operational Bases, or BOI, who were conducting community outreach inside the establishment. The team included state police, National Guard and municipal police personnel.

Notigram reported that a state police officer took the phone to speak directly to the caller. The person hung up upon realizing police were involved, thwarting the attempted extortion.

Staff from the Línea Amarilla program provided psychological support after Fernanda suffered acute distress. Once she was calm enough to leave, she was taken safely home to her family.

The report also relayed authorities’ advice to hang up on extortion calls, avoid transferring money or sharing personal information, notify relatives and report the number through 089 or the 911 emergency service.
