U.S. citizen detained in Sonora with 5,445 rounds, authorities say

Tribuna Sonora reports that Mexican federal authorities detained Yanet “N” in San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora, on Friday, September 11, and identified her as a U.S. citizen allegedly serving as a logistics operator in the movement of weapons for a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel. Tribuna Sonora says the operation took place near the border crossing with the United States during monitoring and crime-prevention patrols. The report says authorities seized 5,445 rounds of ammunition and a vehicle.

According to the Security Cabinet communiqué cited by Tribuna Sonora, the operation involved coordination among the Navy Secretariat, the National Defense Secretariat, the Attorney General’s Office, the National Guard, and the Secretariat for Security and Citizen Protection. The Security Cabinet said the seizure could affect criminal groups’ operational and financial capacity by about 1.655 million pesos, while authorities described the broader objective as limiting the movement of weapons and ammunition that could be used in violence.

The source identifies the alleged Sinaloa Cartel faction as Los Mayos, but that affiliation remains an attributed official claim rather than a court finding. Tribuna Sonora also reports that authorities found an identification card associated with the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry, identifying Yanet “N” as a corrections officer; the report says the authenticity, employment status, and validity of that document were still under review. The woman was placed at the disposal of the Attorney General’s Office, which will determine her legal status as the investigation proceeds.
