Guanajuato fuel seizure estimated at 59 million liters
Authorities reported an estimated 59 million liters of suspected fuel, 10 storage tanks and three cargo vehicles in San José Iturbide. The final volume, composition, origin and legal status remain under investigation.
Federal and state authorities seized an estimated 59 million liters of suspected fuel during a search in San José Iturbide, Guanajuato, Punto MX reported on September 17. The operation took place in the community of La Fragua.
Investigators also found 10 storage tanks, three cargo vehicles, containers and documents connected to the investigation. The liquid had characteristics of diesel and regular and premium gasoline, but its composition and origin remain subject to official examination.
The fuel was placed under the authority of federal prosecutors. Specialized teams continued measuring, identifying and handling it. Prosecutors will determine the final quantity, the nature and origin of the product, and its legal status.
For scale, the estimated volume equals roughly 371,000 oil barrels, according to Punto MX.
Guanajuato Security and Peace Secretary Juan Mauro González Martínez said the search was part of an ongoing investigation and that the seizure alone did not establish criminal responsibility.
Punto MX reported that the operation also sought to reduce the fire, explosion and spill risks associated with irregular fuel storage, while disrupting possible sources of financing for criminal groups.
