Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán told his former partner Lucero Sánchez that he had wanted to become a musician and play with Banda El Recodo, according to an interview published by El Financiero. Sánchez, a former lawmaker, said Guzmán described a poor childhood and told her that a lack of opportunities and leaving home at a young age helped lead him into drug trafficking. The account is attributed to Sánchez’s recollection.
In a recent conversation with the YouTube channel Gusgri, Sánchez said Guzmán’s stated dream was to join the group associated with Cruz Lizárraga. She said she did not know whether Guzmán ever contacted Lizárraga or whether the idea remained only a personal ambition. Sánchez also recalled that Guzmán believed he had to avoid provoking enemies, while acknowledging that he appeared to enjoy the power to control many things.
Sánchez said she fell in love with Guzmán around 2011 and described outings to the beach and stores. She recalled that he sent her shopping with a personal driver and gave her between 10,000 and 15,000 pesos for groceries and other purchases. El Financiero reported that Sánchez characterized Guzmán’s spending as restrained compared with public perceptions of his fortune; those details, like the musician account, remain claims attributed to her interview.
