The Northeast Cartel is the criminal organization known as the Zetas. Surely you unfortunately remember them; they’re a group considered highly violent and involved in drug trafficking, kidnapping, extortion, and human smuggling.
In February of this year, the U.S. Department of State designated them, along with five other Mexican cartels, as a foreign terrorist organization. Among other things, for resorting to violence to exercise criminal control, including attacks on officials in our country.
Its last leader was Omar Treviño Morales, aka El Z-42. He was one of the individuals who was sent to the United States along with his brother Miguel Ángel Treviño Morales, El Z-40, accused of various charges such as drug trafficking, money laundering, elicitation of firearms, and continuous criminal enterprise. They could potentially face the death penalty if convicted.
The Northeast Cartel is estimated to continue operating in the states of Zacatecas, Tamaulipas, Nuevo León, Coahuila, San Luis Potosí, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Morelos, Tabasco, and Veracruz. In addition, it also has a presence in Guatemala, Honduras, and Colombia.
