Sorcery and Love Spells Among Graves: Gravediggers in Tampico Reveal Witchcraft Practices

For years, Don Silverio Dámaso Domínguez and his colleagues have witnessed all kinds of rituals, which is why, as soon as he gets home from work, he ‘bathes’ himself in holy water.
The workers of the Union of Gravediggers, Cemeteries, and Funeral Homes in Tampico have witnessed all sorts of things when it comes to the placement of spells, bindings, incantations, or curses by “santeros” or “witches” who go to the graves in the cemeteries, taking advantage of the energies that surface there.
Don Silverio Dámaso Domínguez Guerrero recounted in simple terms that his fellow workers in the Union of Gravediggers have clearly witnessed these actions, which don’t necessarily take place at midnight or in the early hours of the morning.
He said that for years he and his colleagues have witnessed all these malevolent practices, which is why as soon as he gets home from work, he “bathes” himself with holy water to ward off the evil that individuals seeking to harm others have placed on the graves.
He warned that they often find jars containing certain substances buried in graves, along with underwear, photographs of both men and women, and even stuffed animals, which, as noted, are hidden among the graves after digging around the perimeter.
He explained that this practice of burying love spells, curses, or witchcraft is most visible in the Tancol Municipal Cemetery, although for sorcerers, witches, or practitioners of Santería, any cemetery will do for their spells.
Based on his 58 years of experience working in cemeteries as a gravedigger or undertaker—he arrived at the one on Miguel Hidalgo Avenue when he was seven—he explained that ‘witch doctors’ ‘look for’ graves where adults or children who died violently were buried, whether run over or in a serious accident, because according to these magical beliefs, ‘the energies that emerge from those graves contribute to a greater effectiveness of the spells’.
