The court hearing for Ovidio Guzmán López, also known as “El Ratón,” initially scheduled for January 9, 2026, in the District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago, has been postponed to July 10 of the same year, by order of Federal Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman, as part of the process to set the date for his sentencing on drug trafficking and organized crime charges in the United States.
According to updated federal court records, Guzmán López’s appearance on January 9, 2026, was intended to establish the sentencing schedule, after the defendant pleaded guilty to four charges related to drug trafficking, money laundering, and participation in a criminal organization linked to the Sinaloa Cartel. Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman rescheduled the hearing for July 10, 2026, without publicly detailing the specific reasons for the schedule change in the publicly available court record.
In previous court documents, the District Court for the Northern District of Illinois noted that Guzmán López accepted a plea agreement that will allow him to avoid a potential life sentence in exchange for admitting his responsibility in the production and trafficking of synthetic drugs, primarily fentanyl, as well as other illicit substances shipped to the United States. U.S. federal authorities have described the “Los Chapitos” faction, led by the sons of Joaquín Guzmán Loera, as one of the main operators in the trafficking of fentanyl into the country.
According to court records, Guzmán López was arrested in Mexico in 2023 and subsequently extradited to the United States to face charges in Chicago, where the U.S. government accused him of coordinating shipments of large volumes of fentanyl, cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine. In July 2025, the defendant formally changed his plea to guilty before Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman, in a hearing where he acknowledged his participation in the criminal organization associated with the Sinaloa Cartel.
At that same hearing, the federal prosecution stated that the plea agreement includes Guzmán López’s cooperation with the U.S. government in future investigations related to cartel members, which could influence the final sentencing decision. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois has emphasized that the proceedings against Guzmán Loera’s sons are part of a strategy to dismantle the network responsible for introducing what they describe as “overwhelming” quantities of fentanyl into the U.S. market.
With the postponement of the key hearing to July 10, 2026, Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman will have additional time to review the terms of the plea agreement, as well as the cooperation reports and evidence presented by the prosecution and the defense. Following that hearing, the court will set the specific date on which Guzmán López will be sentenced, which will determine the penalty he will face in the U.S. federal prison system.
