Rafael Caro Quintero, known as “The Narco of Narcos,” checked into Adolfo López Mateos hospital in Toluca, State of Mexico, early Monday. At 72, the notorious co-founder of the Guadalajara Cartel is set for a planned procedure to address his ongoing prostate condition, as reported by journalist Mario C. Rodríguez through Milenio.
Locked up at CEFERESO No. 1 in Sinaloa since his 2022 arrest, Caro Quintero has repeatedly battled to secure adequate medical care. Just a month ago, he secured a court order allowing him immediate medical attention at “El Altiplano” after arguing that prison authorities had neglected his health needs.

In September, a judge granted him an amparo, highlighting the need for specialized monitoring to address his heart and prostate issues. The legal document underscores his demand for care from cardiology and urology experts—a demand underscored by his deteriorating health.
Over a year ago, authorities had to rush him from the high-security prison for emergency surgery at the same hospital. At that time, stage 4 prostate growth triggered the urgent need for treatment. The shadow of his past still looms large, but now, it’s his health that dictates the next move.
