In Culiacán, Sinaloa, the National Guard seized a statue of Jesús Malverde, known as the “patron saint” of drug traffickers, used to conceal a shipment of methamphetamine. As part of their broader public security strategy, authorities targeted a courier service in response to the rising use of these companies by criminal groups to distribute drugs across Mexico.
During the inspection, a detection dog signaled a suspicious cardboard box containing a fiberglass statue and bags of coffee beans. Hidden among the beans and inside the Jesús Malverde figurine, officers discovered 15 packets of meth, known locally as “crystal.” While the exact weight wasn’t disclosed, the shipment was intended for a residence in La Paz, Baja California. The confiscated drugs are now under the custody of federal authorities in Sinaloa, pending further investigation.
Every May 3rd, Jesús Malverde is venerated in northern Mexico, with his primary shrine located in Culiacán. According to folklore, Malverde was a bandit who stole from the rich to help the poor in Sinaloa. Though his historical existence remains debated, his legend endures, inspiring a Telemundo series in 2021.
Whether or not he was real, Malverde has become a symbol for drug traffickers and criminals seeking protection, despite not being recognized by the Catholic Church. His altars, adorned with offerings like alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana, attract devotees seeking favors such as safety from rivals or the return of missing persons.
This past May 3rd marked 115 years of the Jesús Malverde tradition, drawing thousands of followers to his chapel near the Government Palace in Culiacán. The celebration, featuring offerings, alcohol, and banda music, has spread beyond Sinaloa, with a chapel in Mexico City now dedicated to both Malverde and Santa Muerte.
