Rubén Oseguera González, better known as “El Menchito” and the son of CJNG leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes (“El Mencho”), has been convicted in a U.S. federal court on charges of drug trafficking and firearms violations. The verdict came down on September 20, 2024, in Washington, D.C., after a two-day jury deliberation, sealing the fate of one of the most notorious heirs to Mexico’s cartel leadership.
Born in San Francisco, California, Oseguera was groomed for the family business from a young age, with former Cartel del Milenio boss Oscar “El Lobo” Nava Valencia testifying that El Menchito had been introduced into the drug trade by his father at just 15 years old. By his early twenties, Oseguera commanded hundreds of men within the CJNG, controlling the flow of cocaine and methamphetamine. The CJNG expanded under the leadership of El Mencho, and his son’s role grew as a crucial link in the organization’s methamphetamine operations, overseeing production and transport to the U.S.
In his trial, Oseguera was accused of helping manage the cartel’s multi-million-dollar methamphetamine business, with shipments flown to the U.S.-Mexico border, often via Tijuana, before being distributed across the United States. El Menchito’s role went beyond trafficking; he also managed security for cartel operations and was implicated in violent clashes with rival groups like Los Zetas and La Familia Michoacana.
First arrested in Mexico in 2014, Oseguera’s legal journey has been complex. Though initially acquitted of some charges by a Mexican court, he was later re-arrested and extradited to the U.S. in 2020, where he faced federal charges. His defense team attempted to block his extradition by claiming mistaken identity and procedural flaws, but the appeals were denied.
Oseguera’s sentencing is scheduled for January 10, 2025, where he faces decades in prison. Despite his conviction in the U.S., his father, “El Mencho,” remains at large, continuing to lead the CJNG, one of Mexico’s most powerful and violent drug cartels.
