Jorge Armando N., alias “El Licenciado,” pleaded not guilty to the murder of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo Rodríguez and alleges he was tortured by masked agents of the State Attorney General’s Office.
The initial hearing in case 1027/2025 for the murder of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo Rodríguez took place this Wednesday.
Jorge Armando N. is accused of aggravated homicide and intentional bodily harm, while seven of the mayor’s bodyguards are accused of intentional homicide by omission.
He denounces torture
Jorge Armando N. decided to speak out to denounce that during and after his arrest he was beaten and tortured by members of the Michoacán Attorney General’s Office, without any possibility of contact with a legal representative, until he was transferred to the Altiplano Federal Prison in Mexico City.
He reported how members of the state Attorney General’s Office threatened him, trying to force him to confess, telling him that they had his partner in a room and that they were going to kill her, that his composite sketch and description were created in his presence, that he was videotaped, and that the reports from the public prosecutor’s office regarding his transfer to the Altiplano Federal Prison do not match the information and photographs published by the press.
He denied any connection to organized crime groups and outlined his life story, primarily in the electricity sector, although he claimed to hold a degree in communication sciences and journalism.
The Hearing
During the hearing, which was expected to last late into the night, the defense attorneys for “El Licenciado” and Carlos Manzo’s bodyguards presented various pieces of evidence that were admitted by the judge, such as ballistic reports, testimonies from members of the National Guard, and the report on the security operation implemented at the event in which the mayor was participating when he was murdered, among others.
A 15-minute recess was then declared, and the prosecution requested to present two additional pieces of evidence.
