The former legal consultant of the SRE assured that Mexico can win the case against the weapons manufacturers even if the US Supreme Court is conservative and pro-weapons.
The former legal consultant of the Foreign Ministry, Alejandro Celorio, assured that the firearm vendors of the United States are “scared to death” of the lawsuits that the Mexican government has presented to stop the trafficking.
Participating in the forum “Let the disarmament process begin”, he explained that this fear is due to the fact that an eventual victory of Mexico opens the possibility of knowing the route of the weapons from the moment they leave the stores until they reach the hands of the cartels.
“The lawsuit in Tucson is moving forward, to the extent that the companies, there are five stores, are saying: judge, stop the litigation, (stop) the production of evidence, because they are scared to death that the traceability evidence will be known, how many of those weapons sold are in Mexico,” he explained.
In the previous government, with Celorio as head of the strategy, Mexico filed two lawsuits in the United States: the first in 2021 in Boston against weapons manufacturers and the next in Tucson, Arizona in 2022 against distributors.
The legal process in the highest US court will be discussed on March 4.
In this context, Celorio considered it necessary for the Foreign Ministry to speed up the work in Arizona because in this way the Mexican arguments before the United States Court could be strengthened.
“There is a very intelligent race, there is a race against time, between now and June, because perhaps between now and June, and here we have to cheer the Foreign Ministry team a lot, we have to hurry, because what if we get valuable information about the traceability of the weapons, in the case of Tucson, while the Supreme Court case is pending,” he added.
He also considered that Mexico can win the lawsuit against the manufacturing companies that will be discussed before the US Supreme Court, despite the conservative position of the highest American court.
He argued that this possible victory is, first, because the lawsuit is well prepared, but also because it’s not about arms control but about responsible trade.
“The argument of can Mexico be defeated? Yes. The argument of can Mexico win? Yes, it’s a litigation, with a 50/50 chance. Whoever assures me that we are going to lose, I think I would count on them now for the Super Bowl. There is no way of knowing what will happen.
“Because the Supreme Court, while conservative and pro-gun, the issue of the lawsuit isn’t about gun control, it’s about responsible trade. Just like it could be a lawsuit against an automaker for selling defective cars,” he explained.

Is like comparing apples to pears, defective automobiles are recalled, defective weapons have warranties. What the mexican government is trying to accomplish is like saying car manufacturers are liable for car used in illegal acts like trafficking, hit and runs, etc, etc. Total nonsense and trying as usual to place the blame somewhere else. Getting rid of corruption at the border and inland checkpoints in mexican territory could produce beter results
You’re 100% it’s comparing apples to pears. Vehicles are meant for transportation, guns are meant to shoot a projectile at a target. Often killing it. One of which is completely legal in one country, while the other is heavily regulated.
you are really stupid, they are comparing the process not the products, if you say they are blaming someone else for the corruption at the border, then USA is blaming mexico for the drug trafficking and USA should get rid of the corruption at the border too or stop doing drugs and then cartels will not exist because the drug business is over.
