A canine binomial found a possible cargo of fentanyl and methamphetamine hidden in PVC tubes alongside the freight railroad tracks in the municipality of Cajeme, Sonora.
The National Guard and the Mexican Army personnel found seven PVC pipes abandoned on the railroad, discovering they were sealed on both sides with brown adhesive tape and had a higher-than-normal weight.
The agents noticed that the canine pair changed their behavior as they passed by the tubes, so they proceeded to inspect them, finding inside several packages filled with a coarse substance with characteristics similar to fentanyl and methamphetamine.
Despite an operation being implemented in the Centauro del Norte colony to identify the responsible for the shipment, the authorities could not locate the responsible, it reads in the statement issued by the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC).
It should be remembered that this is not the first time that federal authorities have discovered a similar “hideout” to transport drugs; at the end of August 2020, during a review of the yards of a railway company in Nogales, Sonora, 58 white PVC tubes 1.5 inches wide and one and a half meters long were detected inside which had methamphetamine and fentanyl.
In said assurance, the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena) informed that the PVC pipes were inside a cargo wagon that arrived in Nogales from Guasave, Sinaloa, and that had as its final destination the city of Lewiston in the state of Idaho.
After the alleged prohibition of Los Chapitos to traffic fentanyl by Sinaloa and the region under their control, the confiscation of the opioid increased again, also causing a sanction from the U.S. Department of the Treasury against 13 alleged members of the Sinaloa Cartel and four companies based in Sonora.
In statements from Dámaso López Serrano, alias “El Mini Lic”, the prohibition of Los Chapitos only lasted a month (October 2023), so in the following months, more fentanyl was trafficked or in equal quantities: it was a “simulation” for the efforts of the authorities of the United States and Mexico to focus on other objectives such as the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), sentenced.
One of the most significant seizures in Sonora after the “ban” rose to more than half a million fentanyl pills that Customs and Border Protection agents stopped at the Nogales checkpoint as they attempted to cross hidden in the backseats, doors, and gas tanks of two vehicles.
In the state link between the United States and Sinaloa, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has singled out the Sonora S. de R.L. de C.V. restaurant Concepts Gastronomicos, better known as “Habanero’s” and Morgan Golden Mining S.A. de C.V. for its alleged links to organized crime, specifically to Juan Carlos Morgan Huerta, aka “El Cacayo”.
Two other companies in Sonora would be linked to the alleged financial operators of the Sinaloa Cartel, identified as Sergio Isaías Hernández Mazón and Álvaro Ramos Acosta; these are Exportadora del Campos Ramos Acosta S de R.L. de C.V. and Comercializadora Villba Stone S.A de C.V.
Brian Nelson, the Under Secretary of the U.S. Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, sentenced the four “accomplices and facilitators of the illicit fentanyl networks.”
