SEMAR’s Strategic Operation Blocks Drug Trafficking Route

Major Cocaine Bust: The Mexican Navy Secretariat (SEMAR) successfully thwarted a significant drug smuggling attempt in Michoacán. At the port of Lázaro Cárdenas, a fast boat carrying over a ton of cocaine was intercepted. This led to the arrest of six individuals – three Mexicans and three Ecuadorians. 

Impressive Seizure Details

The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) reported that ample evidence was presented during the initial hearing. This resulted in criminal charges for aggravated transportation of cocaine hydrochloride against the detainees. The craft was found 130 nautical miles southwest of Lázaro Cárdenas and carrying 1,345 packages of cocaine. The total weight is over 1,353 kilograms (equivalent to approximately 2,982 pounds).

Historic Year of Impactful Drug Seizures

The Navy Department announced a historic year for drug confiscations, seizing over 48,147 kilograms of cocaine. This marked a record high compared to the previous four years. Their efforts also captured significant amounts of chemical precursors and methamphetamines. The seizures dealt a major blow to drug manufacturing, especially in Durango, Sinaloa, and various customs areas.

In August 2023, SEMAR conducted one of its most significant operations. The team seized 4,350 kilograms of cocaine off the Lázaro Cárdenas coast. Navy personnel intercepted swift boats carrying cocaine and a large quantity of fuel. This significant operation is estimated to have impacted criminal organizations by over 75 million dollars. These actions highlight the Navy’s commitment to combating drug trafficking and organized crime.

Summary

I’ve noticed that a haul of 1,300 kilos of cocaine not only represents a colossal investment but also poses a logistical challenge, as moving 2,866 lbs discreetly is no mean feat. This specific quantity has become a significant trend in seizures over the past three years, indicating that the business is thriving. In determining the size of such a load, traffickers factor in potential losses while ensuring overall profitability. Whoever incurred the loss of this particular shipment undoubtedly took a financial hit, yet such losses are often chalked up as part of doing business.
