CANCÚN, QUINTANA ROO — Julio César de la Fuente Hernández, a local tour driver, has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for the 2022 rape and murder of a Chinese tourist. The court also imposed more than 1.16 million pesos in fines and damages. This is one of the harshest sentences in recent years for a crime against a foreign visitor in the Mexican Caribbean.
The victim, identified only as Yanping, had booked a solo day tour to visit Tulum, Cobá, and a cenote. Julio César, who worked for a yet-unnamed tour agency, diverted the route after the other tourists were dropped off. Her body was found the next day in an empty lot off Avenida Chetumal in Cancún’s Region 225. Forensic analysis revealed signs of rape, beating, and manual strangulation. Authorities quickly identified the driver as the last person to see her alive.
A search warrant led to the discovery of her cell phone and passport at Julio César’s home. DNA evidence matched the suspect. Video footage from the city’s C5 surveillance system showed the tour van near the scene where the body was dumped. These pieces built an airtight case.
While the tour company has not been publicly named, sources say it cooperated with authorities. The case has raised red flags about oversight in the tour industry and the safety of solo travelers.
Quintana Roo has the highest femicide rate in Mexico. In 2022 alone, the state registered 52 femicides, with only six arrests. Foreign tourists have also been caught in cartel crossfire and drug turf wars in Cancún and Tulum. Yet this case was different. It was personal. A betrayal of trust.
Chinese authorities monitored the case closely. The embassy issued warnings to travelers and ensured the victim’s remains were returned to her family. Diplomatically, tensions were avoided largely due to the fast-tracked investigation and conviction.
In the end, this was a rare moment of accountability. A brutal act met with real consequences in a place too often defined by impunity.
