Journalist Federico Wero Hans, “El Güero Hans” is Shot Outside His Home in Caborca, Sonora.

Caborca, Sonora: Federico Hans, also known as “El Güero Hans,” was shot on the evening of Wednesday, July 17th, outside his home in Caborca. The attack took place around 5:30 pm when armed individuals opened fire on the independent journalist as he was getting into his vehicle.

The Sonora State General Prosecutor’s Office (FGJES) has confirmed the details of the incident. They noted that the assailants fired at Hans from behind as he was entering his car. Despite the attack, Hans survived and was taken by his family members to a nearby emergency hospital. Currently, he is in stable condition, receiving medical attention and police protection. Authorities are investigating the attack and providing security for the journalist as he recovers.

The authorities of the state of Sonora’s current priority is to ensure physical well-being and provide necessary medical care for their recovery from the injuries suffered.

The Public Ministry initiated the investigation folder, involving investigative police and forensic services to determine the origin, authorship, and circumstances of the events, states the information card. The local Public Prosecutor’s Office mentioned that as the investigation progresses, without compromising its confidentiality, the public will be informed of any respective progress.

The Milenio newspaper reported that the journalist, who also serves as the editor of El Observador, focuses on exposing instances of corruption and violence in the area where the Caborca Cartel and factions of the Sinaloa Cartel are active. An armed clash in Caborca on March 19 of this year resulted in seven fatalities and three injuries. “Wero” Hans, while reporting on the incident, captured a harrowing moment that culminated in the death of a 20-year-old.

On that day, there were clashes between two rival criminal groups at the Asunción River during a drag racing event. The confrontation led to the deaths of six alleged attackers and one civilian, and caused injuries to three other people. Federico Hans was among the first to arrive at the scene to report the breaking news in a live broadcast.

During the broadcast, 20-year-old Felipe Sarabia appeared on camera, claiming that his vehicle had been stolen.

“No, no, no, son, do not get in! We do not want any trouble,” Hans is heard saying as Sarabia tries to get into the journalist’s car to escape.

The young man cried out for his life, begging not to be handed over to the authorities. He was afraid of being killed and his last words before being taken to the Municipal Command of Caborca that same night were, “Lord, they’re going to kill me!”

The Sonora Prosecution Office stated that Felipe initially identified himself as “David Ramón” upon arriving at the police station, claiming to be the victim of a robbery. Daniela, Felipe’s mother, arrived at the police station to pick him up.

According to official statements, he was taken to his house that night. Later, his girlfriend took him to his mother-in-law’s house in the Santa Cecilia neighborhood, where he stayed until 5:00 PM on Monday, March 20th. According to reports, he left to run errands and did not return.

The lifeless body of Felipe was found on Monday night near a soccer field in the neighborhood of Burócrata. On his chest was a cardboard sign signed by “La Chapiza,” accusing him of being one of the responsible parties for the death of another young man. The message read: “This is one of the people who killed the boy on the street.”
