Eliseo Imperial Castro, also known as “El Cheyo Ántrax” and nephew of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, was murdered on May 30th. The incident took place around 2:53 PM when a body with gunshot wounds was found in a white Chevrolet Colorado truck on the International Highway Mexico 15, south of Culiacán.
Although the State General Prosecutor’s Office of Sinaloa has not officially confirmed the identity of the deceased, local media, including Ríodoce, report that it is “El Cheyo Ántrax”. Sources indicate that Castro was intercepted and attacked by armed individuals while driving his truck, which had multiple bullet holes in the hood and windshield.
The State Public Security Secretariat stated that firearms and live rounds were found inside the vehicle, although authorities have not confirmed this. Images of the incident circulating on social media show the truck riddled with bullet holes.
Following the murder, an audio message circulated on social media, warning against sharing photos of Cheyo Ántrax’s body on WhatsApp. The message stated: “People, whoever has photos of 41, delete them. There’s trouble if they find the photo. They’re going to beat you up. Be careful!” A second voice added: “They’re going to have to kill all of them because there are several.”
Imperial Castro, cousin and escort of Ismael Zambada Imperial, also known as “El Mayito Gordo,” was considered the last leader of Los Ántrax, a Sinaloa Cartel armed group protecting the Zambada family. Journalist Luis Chaparro, an expert in drug trafficking and security, remarked that Cheyo’s death is “a hard blow for the top faction of the Sinaloa Cartel.”

El Cheyo Ántrax and José Rodrigo Aréchiga Gamboa, known as “El Chino Ántrax,” founded the Los Ántrax cell in 2008 after the Beltrán Leyva brothers split from the Sinaloa Cartel. This group was recognized by its members’ distinctive diamond skull rings.
In May 2020, the killing of El Chino Ántrax left Cheyo as the primary leader of Los Ántrax. Eliseo Imperial Castro was identified by the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) as a high-ranking member of the Sinaloa Cartel and Los Ántrax, linking him to drug trafficking and money laundering.

OFAC froze the assets of Cheyo Ántrax and the Lira Sotelo siblings: Alfonso (“El Atlante”), Javier (“El Hannibal” or “El Carnicero”), and Alma Delia, all associated with the Sinaloa Cartel.
In May 2022, OFAC Director John E. Smith stated, “The Eliseo Imperial Castro and Alfonso Lira Sotelo (‘El Atlante’) organization, dedicated to drug trafficking and money laundering, expanded the Sinaloa Cartel’s influence in California.”
A Southern California court charged Cheyo with trafficking methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana, as well as money laundering. Los Ántrax, primarily operating in Culiacán, has been linked to numerous deaths and violent attacks.
