After the past Sunday, May 5th, there were burnt vehicles in Zacatecas. Security agents were able to capture nine individuals, apparently linked to the Sinaloa Cartel, among them a minor who is originally from the United States.
On Monday, May 6th, authorities reported the arrest of nine individuals who are considered possible perpetrators of violence. The arrests were carried out by agents of the Immediate Reaction Forces in Zacatecas (FRIZ), the State Preventive Police, and personnel from the Army and the National Guard.
In the official report, it can be read that the detainees are from various parts of the country, for example, Alejandra N., 33 years old; Silverio N., 19 years old; Joel Alonso N., 20 years old; Erick Enrique N., 22 years old; Emanuel N., 26 years old; Bernal N., also 26 years old, all of them initially from Durango.
“While Luis David N., 26 years old, and Oscar N., 28, are natives of Fresnillo. In addition, among the captured individuals is a minor originally from the United States, specifically from North Carolina, whose name was not revealed to protect their rights.”
Along with the mentioned individuals, the police seized around 100 doses of crystal, another 100 doses of presumed cocaine, as well as 333 live cartridges of various calibers. The individuals also had five cell phones, in addition to 65 doses of a herb with characteristics of marijuana.
“It is important to mention that, in the last few hours, the arrest of 22 people considered to be responsible for violence has been recorded, who could be directly related to the violent events that took place in the state during Sunday night and early Monday morning,” reads the official report from the authorities.
With these actions, there are a total of 22 people detained following the response of the Sinaloa Cartel to the arrest of six of its members, as confirmed by the State Peace and Security Construction Committee on Sunday. Although the committee did not specify the number of vehicles affected, they did confirm the violent actions.
“These events are considered a reaction from a criminal group known as the Pacific Cartel, which is trying to hinder the actions of the Security Forces after the confrontation that took place this Sunday afternoon,” authorities stated.
On different occasions, people linked to organizations such as the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Sinaloa Cartel have been detained. However, according to an anthropologist and member of the National College, Claudio Lomnitz, the state began experiencing high levels of insecurity after the emergence of Los Zetas between 2002 and 2007.
In addition, he also highlighted the role of alliances between criminal groups in the second lesson of his course, “Anthropology of the ‘Silent Zone.'”
Controlling the state didn’t only mean controlling its roads as possible alternate routes to the northern border. Still, it also drove a wedge between the Sinaloa Cartel and its main allies: the Michoacan Family in the south and the Gulf Cartel in the northeast.
In June 2022, a subject identified by the authorities as the regional leader of the Gulf Cartel with the CJNG was arrested, according to the head of the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena), Luis Cresencio Sandoval, during a morning conference with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
