Melissa Margarita Calderón Ojeda, also known as La China, is a woman who was involved with the Sinaloa Cartel and recently received a 20-year sentence for the crime of qualified homicide.
The Attorney General’s Office of the State (PGJE) of Baja California Sur was the institution that reported on the conviction against two individuals, La China and Eduardo “N”, a man also known as El Cumi, on May 2nd.
The event for which both subjects were sentenced to two decades behind bars happened on January 16, 2015, when they entered a residence and shot a man, causing him to develop acute anemia as a result of the gunshot, ultimately leading to his death.

The investigations by the authorities led to the arrests of the two individuals who are now sentenced. On January 22, 2015, Eduardo was captured, while months later, on September 20, La China was arrested.
“Since then, legal proceedings were initiated against him, and during the trial held last Thursday, April 25th of the current year, the prosecution presented evidence based on expert analysis, statements, and testimonies that were considered sufficient by the judicial authority to issue a sentence against the accused,” reads the statement from the authorities.
It was through an oral trial, held at the end of last April that the sentence against both individuals currently incarcerated in the La Paz Penitentiary Center was determined.
Melissa Margarita is a woman who, was part of a cell identified as the Special Forces Damaso (a group founded by Dámaso López Núñez, alias El Licenciado) and in 2008 she was in charge of 50 hitmen.
This woman operated in Baja California, specifically in the capital of the state, as well as in La Paz and Los Cabos. However, it was in 2015 when she was asked to step down from her leadership position in favor of a man who had just been released from prison: Abel Nahúm, also known as “El Grande”. This upset the La China, who had to give up her leadership role.
After leaving her position within the criminal structure, she formed another group to confront her former allies. In this new organization, she was the boss while her partner, a man nicknamed El Chino, was considered second in command. About 300 drug dealers worked for this cell, which was known for using red motorcycles.

The authorities managed to identify the vehicles in which La China was traveling, so the woman sought to acquire a pickup truck. For this task, she asked Rogelio, also known as El Tyson, to obtain this vehicle for her.
Tyson managed to have his parents’ friends sell a truck to Melissa, but the latter, in order to not pay for the vehicle, murdered the sellers. When Tyson found out about this, he threatened to go to the police with his boss, which caused Melissa to also kill him.
Pedro Héctor Gómez Camarena, also known as El Chino, was arrested in July 2015 and was responsible for betraying the woman who was his partner. This was how the authorities found out the location of hidden graves linked to the criminal group led by La China.
