A ‘narco-tunnel’ excavated with labor, just the right size to cross drugs and people under the border wall between San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora, and Arizona, United States, was discovered by agents of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR).
The discovery was made public on May 3rd by the FGR of Sonora after last Wednesday. State Police of Public Security (PESP) agents located the excavation during their patrolling in coordination with the Border Patrol of the United States.
The first reports indicate that the underground passage measures less than five meters, the necessary distance to cross under the steel border wall built in the Sonora desert, an area that is currently being disputed by factions of the Sinaloa cartel for the trafficking of drugs, weapons, money, and undocumented migrants.
Different tools were also found to create the tunnel, such as shovels, rods, buckets, and sledgehammers. The officials specified that the material was covered with wooden leaves and weeds, aiming not to be seen at a glance.
Therefore, it was reported that the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the FGR in Sonora has initiated an investigation against whoever may be responsible for committing crimes against Health and Human Smuggling.
In addition, it should be noted that no suspects were reported arrested or drugs seized after these events.
Sonora’s northeast has remained the epicenter of violence in the last few months. The reason is that, in this place, two rival factions of the Sinaloa Cartel maintain an intense dispute for territorial control.
This is an armed branch of “Los Chapitos,” a faction led by the sons of Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, and ‘Los Rusos,’ a cell of Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada, the longest-standing leader of the organization based in Sinaloa.
It is worth noting that on March 16th, San Luis Río Colorado was the scene of the murder of Samuel Ibarra Peralta, also known as “El Pía” or “Commander Pía”, the principal lieutenant of Los Chapitos in Sonora.
This individual operated in the Mexicali Valley and was considered a top priority target by the authorities of Baja California. He recently moved to the northern part of Sonora and reported to the Sonora State Attorney General’s Office (FGJES).

Reports from Mexican authorities record that since 1990, when the first drug tunnel was officially discovered, the same one that is attributed to Felipe de Jesús Corona Verbera, a man who was working for ‘El Chapo’.
Security and immigration agencies have found more than 230 clandestine passages, the vast majority of which are in the state of Sonora in the Nogales region that borders Arizona.
A giant drug tunnel was discovered in January 2020 between Tijuana, Baja California, and San Diego, USA. It featured lighting, air conditioning, a high-voltage electrical supply, an elevator, and a rail system on which a cart similar to those used in mining would transport drugs under the international border.
