Ismael Zambada Imperial, better known as ‘El Mayito Gordo’, was a member of the Sinaloa Cartel, active from the mid-2000s until 2014, when authorities located him following an operation south of Culiacán.
According to local media, the capture of ‘El Mayo’ Zambada’s son took place in the community of La Estancia de los Burgos, very close to El Salado, belonging to the capital of Sinaloa. There, members of the Navy could identify the 30-year-old at the time.
As a result of this event, the music group Enigma Norteño was inspired to compose a “narcocorrido” in which they detailed their escape attempts.
“Culiacan heated up, and he left for safety towards the Salado area; that young man was taken away and went there to relax, spending a few days at the ranch to clear my head for a while wouldn’t be a bad idea, so he left, leaving the city,” starts the song by Enigma Norteño.

In this fragment of the melody, the exact location of the arrest is mentioned, which was on the Culiacán-Mazatlán highway, at the Quila point, where the marines arrived on foot, not to alert the protagonist.
“At the Culiacán-Mazatlán highway, the Quila area, the marines entered, sneaking between plots of land to reach him. I know it was in the early morning hours, and El Mayito didn’t think they were coming to arrest him. They arrived on foot to avoid raising suspicion,” continues the topic of the Sinaloan musical group.
In the third stanza, it is remembered that he tried to escape dressed as a bricklayer, but the authorities could recognize his face, so they commented, “You are the fat one,” one of the nicknames by which ‘El Mayo’s son is known.
“I tried to escape and began to disguise myself, dressed as a bricklayer, and started to walk away but was stopped on the way. They recognized his face, said ‘you’re the fat one’ and he couldn’t escape. And even though he denied it, the plan didn’t work,” the song continued.

Ismael Mario, in the mid-2010s, had three of his offspring behind bars. In contrast, he had over 40 fugitives, which worried him because they were after him, but they caught Zambada Imperial.
Among those apprehended at the time were Vicente Zambada Niebla, ‘El Vicentillo’, captured in 2009 while he was in Mexico City, as well as Serafín Zambada Ortiz, arrested in 2012.
Don Mayo feels sorrow with three children in prison. They say they came for the big one, and there are rumors that in the streets, a military squad was waiting for him in the “Burgos” to take the godfather. They were found, and their luck failed. Maybe it was a sign; it was heard in the melody.
