In May 2004, Édgar Valdez Villarreal, better known as ‘La Barbie’, was making preparations for a lavish wedding, which was with the daughter of his partner, Carlos Montemayor, who at that time was 19 years old, while her future husband was 31.
Priscila Montemayor, also known as ‘La Niña’, was married to ‘El Güero’ for more than 7 years. Unfortunately, she was not able to have her dream wedding because authorities already had information about the event.
It was May of 2004 and the preparations were underway for a wedding that promised to be the most spectacular of the last few years in Acapulco bay. The groom had already spent a fortune, they say more than half a million pesos, to honor his wife. It was to be an unforgettable party in Barra Vieja, at the edge of the beach, where the sunsets are framed by an all-powerful sun that dyes the sky with colors ranging from fire, to purple, to pink,” reads Anabel Hernandez’s book, ‘Emma and the Other Cartel Ladies’.
On the edge of the beach, it was hoped that this event would be unforgettable, however, a few days before Arturo Beltrán Leyva made a call to the person he considered as his son, in order to tell him about the problem, because if it were to take place, it would be tragic, with many deaths and arrests.
Valdez Villarreal had no choice but to cancel the engagement and opt for something simpler, without having a wedding trip, as criminal business did not allow it.

The cream of the crop of that social circle were going to gather at the celebration, the presence of the most important leaders in the business that the groom and his father-in-law were involved in is confirmed, who had been partners and friends since 2002. Everything was going smoothly, her family was staying at a luxurious residence in Las Brisas and they were finalizing the last details,” the journalist wrote in her book.
In those years, the Beltran Leyva brothers belonged to The Federation, so among the invited guests there would be dangerous leaders, such as ‘Don Arturo’, ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, the Carrillo Fuentes, among other personalities.
Suddenly, three days before the wedding, the groom received an unexpected call, “son, I am going to give you some bad news and you make the decision, whatever you decide, I will support you,” said Arturo Beltrán Leyva, ‘El Barbas’, who at the time was the leader of the Beltrán Leyva clan and part of the Sinaloa Cartel, the largest criminal conglomerate in Mexico known as The Federation,” reads the work.

Faced with the possible intervention of the government, only Priscila and Édgar agreed to organize a small ceremony and only enter into civil matrimony.
“The government knows every detail about the wedding, the date, time and who will be there, and they will come after us from every direction. But if you want the wedding to take place, let’s go and get married. However, it will be a mess and there will be many casualties,” said ‘El Barbas’, as written in the journalist’s book.
