This is not the first time that the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) has made its presence known in Mexico City (CDMX): one of the first was when it released a video threatening kidnappers and thieves in the Gustavo A. Madero borough (GAM); but perhaps one of the most remembered was the attack against former head of the Secretariat of Citizen Security, Omar García Harfuch.
The video with the threats began to circulate on social media in 2019 and only one year later the attack with 414 shots against García Harfuch was registered, after which he himself pointed to the organization led by “El Mencho” Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes as the responsible party.
Almost five years later, the violence with which the CJNG is directed once again struck Mexico City: near the Northern Penitentiary -GAM municipality- they left behind a cooler with a human head and a narcomessage directed at criminal organizations in the capital.
“We have come to take you out,” reads the narcomessage directed at Los Maceros, La Unión Tepito, and La Familia Michoacana; the signature would be from the alleged plaza boss of the CJNG, a man who identifies himself as “El Jaguar.”
Similarly to 2019, the narcomessage from CJNG launches a threat to whoever “keeps bothering the hard-working people of Mexico City, we are in support of local vendors, from the gum seller to the biggest businesses. We are not extortionists like you.”
The location of the macabre discovery would not be a coincidence either; according to the narcomensaje, the merger of criminal groups in Mexico City was orchestrated from inside the Reclusorio Norte, where the leaders of both organizations are incarcerated: Jesús “Chucho Macero”, Ángel Benjamín “El Willy”, Iván “El Pollo”, and Alexis.
One more chapter in the CJNG in Mexico City occurred on January 12th in the Cuajimalpa borough; contrary to their message of being in favor of the people, alleged members of the “4-letter” cartel attempted a virtual kidnapping of two young residents of the capital.
In a phone call, the victims were given names and personal information of their relatives and were told to go to a hotel room while they asked for a ransom of 200,000 pesos. The virtual kidnapping was about to be carried out if it weren’t for the fact that the family of the young people contacted the authorities and they came to the aid of the “kidnapped”.
Since its arrival to Mexico City, the CJNG has been involved in violent acts where their power as a criminal organization and their bloody ways were made evident: the murder of two Israeli citizens in Plaza Artz Pedregal and the attacks against García Harfuch and journalist Ciro Gómez Leyva are proof of this.
In addition to their threats against other criminal groups, the arrest carried out by authorities in Mexico City of alleged members of the CJNG in the streets of the capital confirm their presence in the city; one of the most recent took place in August 2023 when the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) managed to dismantle a cell of the criminal group in the Benito Juárez municipality and capture five of its members.
According to reports from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the CJNG has a presence in 23 states in the country, although in recent years they have focused on expanding their territories to the Tierra Caliente area in Morelos, State of Mexico, Michoacán and Guerrero, as well as the border with Mexico City, a region largely controlled by La Familia Michoacana, Los Caballeros Templarios and the Sinaloa Cartel.
