The ‘treasures’ Of ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán That The DEA Exhibits As Trophies.

In the fight against drugs led by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), few events have stood out as much as the sentence imposed against Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel who is currently serving a life sentence in the highest security prison in the United States. That is why the agency displays two personal items of the capo behind a showcase, with the aim of reminding that the heinous crimes he was responsible for were punished.

According to data from the US government, both objects are housed in the DEA Museum and Visitor Center, located in Arlington County, Virginia, and displays various significant objects in the history of the fight against drug trafficking.

The first article of ‘El Chapo’ entered this facility in 2018. It is the prisoner uniform he wore in Mexico before his extradition to the neighboring North, a set consisting of a khaki jacket and pants that display the number 3912.

Photographs of his arrival in New York on January 20, 2017 confirm that the former drug trafficker was wearing said garments. Shortly after, he was given the classic orange prison uniform that is used in the USA.

In the description of the article, the DEA wrote:

He will wear a simple and ordinary prison uniform like this for the rest of his life.

Next to him rests a second object that belonged to Guzmán Loera: a golden gun with diamond encrustations.

The weapon that once belonged to the boss was entered into the museum on February 21, 2020.

This is a Beretta 92 F 9MM Parabellum pistol measuring 40 centimeters in length. It is gold-plated, has diamond inlays, and comes with a silencer.

According to the DEA, the weapon was found in one of the safe houses that ‘El Chapo’ used to hide from authorities before his criminal career came to an end.

“It is possible that Guzmán had a custom-made gun made for his two sons,” reads the description.

Although the online collection does not include any other items, it is worth noting that in the ‘El Chapo’ section, there is a third object. It is a unique Mak-90 rifle that also belonged to the drug dealer and was confiscated in the same safe house as the first one.

This last weapon was manufactured by the company Norinco and features gold decorations and Greek fret patterns, an ornament commonly used in Greece.

At the exhibition, the DEA also reminds that Guzmán Loera amassed billions of dollars by trafficking drugs to the US, in addition to being responsible for offenses such as kidnapping, torture and the murder of hundreds of people.

In addition to the personal objects already described, in 2019 it was revealed that Raymond P. Donovan, then agent in charge of the DEA in New York, had the prisoner shirt that ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán wore in Mexico framed and displayed in his office.

The frame that protects it also includes important data in the history of the drug trafficker, as well as photographs.
