CJNG Disassociates From Massacre In León; Offers Reward To Find Those Responsible

On June 12, 2024, the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) denied participating in the massacre that occurred on June 9, 2024, in León, Guanajuato, where four women and two babies were killed. The incident took place at 9:22 pm in a residence on Pénjamo Street, near Parque Hidalgo.

Local media reported that CJNG allegedly placed thirteen banners throughout León, attributed to the Mencho Special Operations Group (GOEM), denying their involvement. One banner read, “The CJNG completely distances itself from the cowardly act on June 9th. We do not kill innocent people and do not need the government to do our work.”

The banners also accused the National Guard of involvement, providing serial numbers of two patrol cars (GN334366 and GN25030) and urging authorities to check cemetery surveillance footage showing Army and National Guard escorts. The CJNG offered a one million peso reward for information on those responsible, including National Guard members and a Federal Ministerial Police agent, Froylán Galicia Espinoza.

Governor Diego Sinhue Rodríguez Vallejo demanded an investigation into the National Guard’s presence at the scene shortly before the killings. Security footage showed five alleged National Guard members entering and leaving the residence minutes before the attack. The governor questioned their actions and any possible search warrant.

The victims were identified by the General State Prosecutor’s Office (FGE) of Guanajuato as Araceli “N” (53), her daughters Ana Cristina “N” (32) and Nayelli Yarel “N” (21), a two-year-old boy, and a three-month-old girl. The attackers reportedly sought a relative of ‘El Barbas,’ a suspected CJNG operator.

León’s interim mayor, Jorge Jiménez Lona, and Security Secretary, Jorge Guillén Rico, confirmed that the National Guard entered the residence before the murders, stressing that no authority should enter private property without a warrant. They also noted that the location was suspected of being a drug selling point.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident, with the National Guard and local officials under scrutiny.
