Upon defending his security strategy once again, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador asserted on May 6, 2024, that in Mexico, there was not more violence but rather more homicides.
When questioned about it during his morning press conference, held at the Treasury Hall of the National Palace, López Obrador, the head of the Federal Executive Branch, asserted that there has been a 22 percent reduction in homicide rates during his administration compared to the previous six-year term of Enrique Peña Nieto.
“All of that [social programs] is not helping to lower the rate of violence, of course, it’s little by little, because we come from a decline, from a huge, extreme, never before seen crisis, that was caused by the neoliberal policies, the politics of plunder,” emphasized the president of the Republic.
“I’m going to show you because that’s what we’re here for; why do you say there is no decrease, or why is there more violence now than before? First, I would tell you that there is not more violence, there are more homicides than in the entire term, there are fewer robberies than in previous terms, there are fewer kidnappings than in previous terms, and fewer federal crimes,” declared the Tabasco politician.”
“Where it has been most difficult for us is in homicides because gangs were created. And when do you think, I’ll leave it up to you as a task, that these gangs were formed whom we still face today? During the neoliberal or neo-Porfirist period, the most well-known gangs were formed, and I’m not talking about musical bands,” said the national leader.
“There, the accounts that are made for us start from the number of homicides in the six-year term, and they forget how we found, or how the country was left in terms of violence. Here they are, worse not [the number of homicides currently], no, no, no,” the head of the Federal Executive Branch stated.”
According to the record of intentional homicides from the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) of the Federal Government, from December 1, 2018, to May 5, 2024, during the administration headed by López Obrador, state and federal prosecutors have recorded 186,139 intentional homicides in Mexico, an average of 78.3 victims per day.
Earlier, the national leader once again defended the role of the Armed Forces in public security tasks, stating that they were not ordered to repress, respected human rights, and assisted the population.
“And now it was innovated that both Marina and [Secretary of National Defense] SEDENA help us in the task of public security, because the Constitution prevented them from doing so, of those things that existed and needed to be updated. Because what worries Mexicans the most? Security” revealed the politician from Tabasco, who condemned the “conservative” governments for only wanting to solve the problem of insecurity with punitive measures. Still, he was committed to addressing the root causes.”

“What has helped the most is the social policy because conservatives and fascists want to solve everything with the use of force and coercive measures. And we think differently; we are addressing the root causes, which were greatly neglected and fueled by corruption, resulting in many crimes and homicides, and a lot of violence,” the president added.
