The Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) delivered Luis Felipe López Zamora, also known as “El Gordo”, to the United States government, who is believed to be an operator of Los Chapitos, a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel (CDS), in compliance with the Extradition Treaty. The man has had an arrest warrant from the Federal Court for the Eastern District of California since 2023 for crimes of organized crime, drug trafficking, and money laundering.
According to official information, from 2019 to 2021, El Gordo belonged to Los Chapitos, a criminal gang for which he trafficked various illicit substances, including fentanyl, from Mexico to Sacramento, California, for distribution. In addition, Luis Felipe López was responsible for collecting the profits from the sale of drugs for their subsequent shipment to Mexico.
López Zamora, also known as “El Gordo”, was arrested on January 2, 2024 in the Salvatierra neighborhood of Tijuana by members of the State Citizen Security Force (FESC). This detention came after a request made by the government of the United States since June 19, 2023 to the Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) to search and capture “El Gordo” for the aforementioned crimes and subsequently extradite him.
The handover of Luis Felipe Lopez took place on the morning of this Thursday, April 18 at the Mexico City International Airport (AICM), to the designated US agents for his transfer to that country.
