Due to the abnormal gusts that have caused pieces of the ceiling to fall and have caused technical difficulties in air traffic, it was decided, according to Civil Protection and the Pacific Airport Group (GAP), to indefinitely close the airport in the city of Mexicali. 250 people, including 80 employees and the rest passengers, were evacuated due to the damages.
“87 kilometers per hour and that led to the detachment of an area of 800 square meters, which prompted the authorities of civil aviation and civil protection to suspend activities. Crews are already arriving to repair the area and it is mentioned that service could be restored on Monday at eight in the morning, although if the weather allows it, it could reopen this Sunday afternoon,” commented René Rosado, municipal director of Civil Protection in Mexicali.”
The decision was announced from five o’clock in the afternoon through GAP’s social media channels and it is estimated that the service will be fully restored by Monday, which means that there are gates that will be able to operate during the Saturday night and early hours of Sunday, depending on risk evaluations and weather conditions.
