A group of armed men, allegedly members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), ambushed elements of the National Defense Secretariat (SEDENA) on Thursday, February 29, 2024, on the border between the municipalities of Tepalcatepec and Aguililla, in the state of Michoacán.
The first reports from local media indicated that the military convoy was attacked with bullets fired from drones and explosives placed on dirt roads, at the Las Cocinas hill, located between the towns of El Montoso and Terrenatillo.
The military personnel assigned to the 43rd Military Zone responded to the attack and an confrontation that lasted several minutes ensued. The death toll was at least four soldiers killed and nine other injured.
The area where the ambush against SEDENA elements took place is a territory disputed by the cartels of “El Abuelo”, led by Juan José Farías Álvarez, in alliance with the Knights Templar against the CJNG.
