100 Army Special Forces Arrive in Tamaulipas Following Kidnapped Migrants

After the kidnapping of 32 migrants in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) reported that 100 of its elements would arrive in the border municipality.

In a brief statement, Sedena (Secretariat of National Defense) specified that this Thursday (January 4), these elements of the Mexican Army Special Forces arrived intending to inhibit the criminal indices and join the state’s security operations.

The Special Forces members left the Mexico City International Airport aboard a B-737 of the National Guard, heading to the General Lucio Blanco International Airport in Reynosa.
The SEDENA explained that these elements, who joined the rest of the security forces in the entity, will conduct inter-institutional operations, which consist of land reconnaissance, deterrence tasks, prevention, patrols, and establishment of military security posts.

“As one of the objectives of this deployment, the security of migrants passing through that area of the country is reinforced; as well as the support for the operations carried out within the Peace and Security Strategy,” says the Armed Forces statement.

The elements of Special Forces are characterized by their excellent mobility, flexibility, deployability, armament, material, equipment, and specialized training.

“The Mexican Army and Air Force collaborate with the framework of the National Security Strategy and the Federal Government’s Zero Impunity Policy, watching over and protecting the welfare of citizens, ensuring peace and security for the population, always acting with full respect for human rights,” the statement said.

This announcement comes after questions to the federal and state governments, who announced on January 3 the alleged rescue of the 32 migrants who were kidnapped from a passenger bus on December 30 on the Reynosa-Matamoros highway.

For this reason, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador criticized the media outlets that reported this information.

“According to Reforma newspaper, they were not rescued; they were set free. It was a series of factors; first, what I am telling you is that intervention came soon, and all the authorities collaborated, which is very good of the Governor of Tamaulipas; the sensationalism also helps because it is known throughout the country,” said the executive during his morning conference on January 4.
