Foreign eSIMs do not bypass Mexico’s phone-line registration rules

A foreign data eSIM does not protect a Mexican phone line from suspension if the national number remains outside the country’s mandatory registration system, according to Infobae México. These eSIMs can provide mobile internet access without assigning a Mexican telephone number, allowing users to browse websites and use services such as WhatsApp and Telegram, but they do not replace a conventional national line.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (CRT) said the registration rules require a communication service to have its own number linked to a physical or electronic SIM and to support voice traffic and SMS. That means an international data eSIM cannot prevent a local line from being blocked or suspended. Users may also lose access to text-message authentication codes used by banks, government services and account-recovery systems, even while data applications continue working. Infobae México reported that the CRT warned users against online offers claiming that temporary digital configurations can avoid the block.

The registration effort had linked 84,164,340 lines to an individual, or 70.1% of the total eligible for registration in Mexico, according to the regulator’s cited report. The suspension schedule advances in stages every two weeks based on each user’s number. Infobae México also reported that foreign eSIM data can cost up to 10 times the average price offered by Mexican operators, with roaming restrictions and fair-use policies potentially limiting prolonged use. The CRT recommends using formal channels provided by each carrier and completing registration within the applicable deadline.
