Mexico’s FGR still reviewing legality of 59 million liters seized in Guanajuato
Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office is still reviewing permits connected to 59 million liters of fuel seized in Guanajuato and has not determined whether the fuel was illegal, President Claudia Sheinbaum said. According to El Diario de Chihuahua, Sheinbaum said she had consulted Attorney General Ernestina Godoy, who told her that investigators were continuing to examine the permits and would report their findings.
Sheinbaum’s comments followed the announced removal of Juan Francisco Vera as the FGR’s delegate in Guanajuato. The change came after inconsistencies emerged around an operation initially presented as a historic seizure of allegedly illegal fuel. On Sept. 17, one day before Sheinbaum visited Guanajuato, state authorities and the FGR announced the seizure of more than 59 million liters at a storage terminal in San José Iturbide.
El Diario de Chihuahua reported that the intervention had actually begun on Sept. 4 and that the plant resumed normal operations on Sept. 10, while the fuel’s illegality had not been established. Grupo SIMSA said the terminal does not own the fuel but provides storage services to other companies and has the permits required for its operations.
The FGR ordered its Organized Crime Specialized Prosecutor’s Office, known as FEMDO, to take over the investigation. The review includes documents and interviews with company executives to determine ownership, operations, and the financial and tax traceability of all the fuel. Sheinbaum said a final conclusion will depend on the investigation.
