Reporting and context
A judge in Oaxaca ordered pretrial detention for Juchitán Mayor Miguel Sánchez Altamirano, known as “Quetu,” after prosecutors accused him of allegedly leading an extortion network linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. According to El Diario de Chihuahua, the judge also ordered the detention of Carlos Alberto de la Paz, known as “La Parka,” whom state authorities identify as an alleged member of the mayor’s criminal structure.
The Oaxaca state prosecutor’s office, FGEO, said the judge validated both arrests during an initial hearing and ordered the two men held while their legal status is resolved. Prosecutors requested that they be charged with aggravated extortion and a crime against state security; the extortion charge carries mandatory pretrial detention, according to the agency.
El Diario de Chihuahua reported that both men were arrested on Sept. 23 during an operation. The FGEO said prosecutors presented evidence and requested that the pair be bound over for trial, but the agency did not clarify whether the defense sought additional time for the judge to decide. If that deadline was extended, a new hearing could take place next week. The accusations remain allegations, not findings of guilt.
