Puerto Aventuras mayor arrested in extortion investigation
Publimetro México reports that Gilberto Gómez Martínez, Jorge “N” and Karla Paola “N” were arrested under judicial warrants over alleged payment demands and threats against merchants.
Gilberto Gómez Martínez, the Morena-affiliated mayor of Puerto Aventuras, Quintana Roo, was arrested on October 15 on suspicion of aggravated extortion against local merchants, according to Publimetro México.
State prosecutors’ agents also arrested Jorge “N,” identified in the report as his nephew, and Karla Paola “N,” an employee of Puerto Aventuras’ Economic Development Directorate. The three arrests were carried out under warrants issued by a judge.
Publimetro México reported that prosecutors accuse the three of demanding improper payments from merchants and threatening to confiscate their goods, prevent them from working or physically assault them. The complaints also describe threats of abduction and beatings against people who refused to pay, along with demands for weekly payments to continue trading.
The investigation covers alleged conduct dating to January 2026. Prosecutors said one merchant was asked to pay for administrative procedures that were actually free, the outlet reported. That account forms part of the investigation into the payment demands.
The three detainees are to be brought before a control judge, who will determine the next stage of their legal proceedings over the aggravated-extortion allegations. The report described the arrests and pending court appearance; it did not report a subsequent court ruling.
