Original reporting: Jornada Baja California
What happened
President Claudia Sheinbaum said the seizure of more than 50 million liters of fuel in Guanajuato followed coordination among federal and state agencies, the FGR and Pemex. Officials also reported a 75% decline in the state's daily homicide average, while the FGR is expected to provide details about the group operating the fuel facilities.
Reporting and context
President Claudia Sheinbaum said Guanajuato's seizure of more than 50 million liters of fuel resulted from closer coordination among federal and state security agencies, the Federal Attorney General's Office and Pemex, according to Jornada Baja California.
Sheinbaum said the operation formed part of a new FGR investigation intended to establish where illegally imported fuel came from and where it was supposed to be sold. She said her government wants arrests in cases involving illegal fuel sales and that additional investigations are expected to be presented in October. Omar García Harfuch said no arrests had been made in the latest seizure, but that previous huachicol investigations had led to arrests after seizures.
Jornada Baja California reported that officials linked the broader security strategy to a reduction in Guanajuato's daily homicide average. Marcela Figueroa said the average fell from 12.7 killings per day in February 2025 to 3.2 in August 2026, a 75% reduction. The report also cited 2,095 weapons seized, 980 million pesos in blows against organized crime and 101 million pesos in extortion payments that authorities said were prevented. Officials did not identify the criminal group operating the fuel facilities; García Harfuch said the FGR would provide details.
