Former Mayor of Ignacio Zaragoza, Chihuahua, Killed in Armed Attack

The attack occurred in the town he governed, on Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez Street. The former candidate for state representative was driving his pickup truck when the attack took place.

Lauro Orozco Gómez, 55, the former mayor of Ignacio Zaragoza, was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon on Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez Street. His body was found inside a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.

Witnesses reported that the attack was sudden, with armed men intercepting the former mayor’s vehicle and opening fire. Neighbors heard at least ten gunshots and immediately alerted authorities through the emergency system.

Upon arriving at the scene, Public Security officers found the pickup truck and Orozco Gómez in the driver’s seat. The victim had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics confirmed he had no vital signs.

The area was cordoned off to allow forensic experts and investigators to work. Authorities haven’t specified the type of weapon used, but indicated that the number of shots suggests a targeted attack.

According to sources close to the investigation, it’s possible the assailants had previously monitored the former mayor’s movements, as the attack occurred during a time when the street is typically busy. So far, no arrests have been reported, nor have the perpetrators been sighted.

Lauro Orozco Gómez had served as mayor of Ignacio Zaragoza for three terms: 2004-2007, 2018-2021, and 2021-2024. After completing his last term, he remained active in community affairs and continued to be a well-known figure in the area.

He also had recent involvement in regional politics, running as a candidate for local deputy for the Citizens’ Movement party in the last elections, which kept him in the public eye and active in various municipalities in the northwestern part of the state.

To date, the State Attorney General’s Office hasn’t issued a public statement regarding the murder of Lauro Orozco Gómez. An official statement with preliminary findings of the investigation is expected in the coming hours.
