According to journalist Luis Chaparro, the mastermind behind the kidnapping of El Mayo was Chapo Guzman. According to Luis Chaparro, before his arrest in 2016, El Chapo asked his sons to surrender to the United States authorities in order to reach an agreement in his benefit.
But Los Chapitos refused. He had asked his sons to surrender. He knew what was pending and knew that a life sentence was coming. And I think he must’ve thought, “They’re going to go after my sons if they continue working,” the journalist recounted during an interview on this saga. Of the Chapitos, the only one who wanted to leave the mafia lifestyle behind and dedicate himself to something else was Joaquín Guzmán López.
Who, according to Luis Chaparro, wasn’t happy with his brothers’ operation. Without specifying dates, he said that once behind bars and sentenced to life imprisonment in the United States, El Chapo wrote a letter to his sons and recommended that they surrender, plead guilty, and hand over Mayo Zambada in order to receive the minimum sentence for the violations of organized crime.
The one who took and accepted his father’s suggestions was Joaquín Guzmán López. Later he reached an agreement with the United States authorities to surrender voluntarily and help in the arrest of El Mayo. According to Luis Chaparro, the negotiation between Guzmán López and the North American agents began when he contacted them to tell them that he would turn himself in.
The idea that Joaquín would voluntarily turn himself in wasn’t just to obtain benefits for himself as Mini Lic did at the time, but also to ask for benefits for his brother Ovidio who had a losing case. Luis Chaparro assured that this information was revealed to him by the family of El Chapo Guzmán and confirmed by US federal agents.
Luis Chaparro added that Joaquín Guzmán asked for guarantees to be able to arrive safely to the United States with El Mayo kidnapped, and that it was there that the US Homeland Security, came into operation.
The United States agents said that they have these undercover planes that are never registered, that they call them covert, and the pilot is undercover. In that plane, the only person who traveled armed was the pilot, that is why they were able to land. And on the subject of the pilot, we’ll never hear anything about him again, concluded Luis Chaparro.
