In a tragic turn of events, Yolanda Sánchez, the first female mayor of Cotija, Michoacán, was brutally murdered in a drive-by shooting on Monday night. This comes only eight months after she narrowly escaped a kidnapping orchestrated by the violent Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

Sánchez’s assassination has sparked outrage and condemnation from government officials, with a joint effort by federal and state agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice. Meanwhile, her successor, also a member of the National Action Party, has received public threats from the CJNG.

The CJNG has also taken credit for Sánchez’s murder, with reports of a dangerous gang known as “Calaveras” operating in the region under their control. Sánchez’s kidnapping earlier this year, where she was forced to replace the town’s police chief with a CJNG chosen individual, was a clear indication of their control over the area.

The violence in Mexico’s political landscape is not new, with 35 candidates and pre-candidates murdered during the 2023-24 campaign season. Sánchez’s murder serves as a grim reminder of the country’s ongoing struggle with organized crime and the dangers faced by those in politics.

The recent wave of political violence in Mexico is causing concern among citizens and politicians alike. The assassination of Ricardo Arizmendi Reynoso, a candidate for the Mayor of Cuautla, has sparked outrage and condemnation from various political parties.

Lucía Virginia Meza Guzmán, candidate for governor of Morelos, has held the mayor and governor of the state responsible for the murder and expressed her sadness and shock over the loss of her friend. Rafael Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas, president of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, also condemned the killing and called for an end to the violence plaguing the electoral process.

But the violence doesn’t stop there. Just hours after Arizmendi Reynoso’s assassination, another candidate, Gilberto Palomar González, was shot at while at his campaign headquarters. The attack left him and three others injured. In a separate incident, the truck belonging to Juan Sandoval, a candidate for Mayor of Tehuacán, was shot at and a banner with threats was left behind.

The violence is spreading beyond just the state of Morelos. In Jalisco, a candidate for mayor was shot at and in Chiapas, armed men attacked the house of another candidate. These acts of political violence have been condemned by various political leaders, but the concern and fear for the upcoming elections continue to grow.

The State Coordination Table for the Construction of Peace in Morelos has stated that Arizmendi Reynoso had no history of security incidents, highlighting the alarming and seemingly random nature of these attacks. As the election date approaches, it is crucial for the authorities to take action and ensure the safety of all candidates and citizens.

In the midst of this violence, we must remember the faces behind these political figures and the families and loved ones who are left devastated by these senseless acts. We must demand justice and an end to this cycle of violence. Our thoughts go out to all those affected and we must stand together to bring about change and a safer future for Mexico.

The disappearances in Mexico have become a growing concern, with the latest case being four men, bricklayers and laborers, who were abducted from their town of Las Cruces in Jalisco. The Prosecutor of Jalisco has confirmed the events and an operation has been launched to locate the missing men. This incident has brought to attention the dire security situation in Lagos de Moreno, a region that has already been marked with previous incidents of violence and kidnappings. Unfortunately, this is not the first time such an event has occurred, as a few months ago, five young men disappeared in the same area, causing a nationwide outrage. The case gained even more attention when a leaked image and video of the friends being held captive went viral. While some suspects have been detained, the whereabouts of the five young men still remain unknown. The community and their families continue to wait for answers and justice.
