At 76, Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada, the oldest leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, remains at the helm but is now bedridden due to severe diabetes. Reports from Sin Embargo and Ríodoce on June 6 confirmed that the DEA has stated his health has significantly deteriorated, leaving him unable to continue his criminal activities.
Zambada, hidden in the ‘Golden Triangle,’ suffers from organ damage and vision problems, requiring strict medical supervision. Despite battling diabetes for around forty years, his condition worsened due to poor eating habits.

In her most recent work titled “The Secret History: AMLO and the Sinaloa Cartel”, journalist Anabel Hernández pointed out that ‘El Mayo’ Zambada’s illness was under control.
On the other hand, in its National Drug Threat Assessment 2024, published on May 9, the DEA pointed out that ‘El Mayo’ was “in poor physical health”, casting doubt on the leadership of his faction. However, the severity level was not indicated.
At 76 years old, ‘El Mayo’ is the only drug trafficker from the first generation who is still alive and free.
Diabetes is a chronic disease affecting how the body converts food into energy, caused by insufficient insulin production or ineffective use. The main types are type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes.
Acute diabetes is a temporary condition with rapidly rising blood glucose levels, requiring immediate medical attention. It can occur in type 1 or type 2 diabetics due to infections, medication errors, or severe stress, potentially leading to serious complications like diabetic ketoacidosis or hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state.
Diabetes can lead to serious health issues such as cardiovascular diseases, neuropathy, nephropathy, retinopathy, and foot problems that may result in amputations. Proper diabetes management, including monitoring blood sugar, maintaining a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and adhering to medical treatments, is crucial to prevent or delay these complications.
