On the night of May 11, rumors surfaced about the potential death of Rodolfo Sierra Santana, also known as ‘La Teresa,’ a key figure within the Los Viagras cartel. Reports suggest ‘La Teresa’ was ambushed near Zirándaro, on the Michoacán-Guerrero border, by CJNG hitmen under orders from Audias Flores Silva, or ‘El Jardinero.’ Traveling with bodyguards in a convoy, ‘La Teresa’ was reportedly attacked with high-powered weaponry, including a Minigun. ‘La Teresa’ leads the Sierra Santana clan controlling the Viagras, with her brother Nicolás, ‘El Gordo’ or ‘El Coruco,’ as another prominent leader.

In November 2018, ‘La Teresa’ was captured in Buenavista during a naval operation while attempting to flee. Despite his secretive nature, he reportedly led a publicized interrogation of a CJNG hitman in January 2022. His brother, ‘El Gordo,’ is suspected of orchestrating the June 2023 murder of ex-self-defense leader Hipólito Mora Chávez, with another leader, Heladio Cisneros Meneras (‘La Sirena’), implicated as well.
The youngest of the Sierra Santana siblings, Daniel, known as ‘El Chaco,’ tragically died in January 2024 by triggering a mine in a Buenavista minefield. Another brother, José Carlos (‘La Sopa’), was killed in a March 2017 shootout in Peña Colorada and was a major target for Michoacán’s Attorney General’s Office at the time.
Los Viagras, originally from Arcelia, Guerrero, migrated into Michoacán as part of the G200 self-defense group, formed by then-commissioner Alfredo Castillo to combat Los Caballeros Templarios.
