The Attorney General of the state of Baja California announced the capture of three individuals related to the murder of the Municipal Public Security Director of San Quintín, Mario Martínez Martínez, which occurred on October 13th of last year in the Infonavit Presidentes neighborhood, in the Cerro Colorado delegation of Tijuana. These individuals are believed to be connected to the Ismael El Mayo Zambada faction of the Sinaloa Cartel in that region.
The head of the state prosecutor’s office, Elena Andrade Ramirez, confirmed that the detained individuals are Roberto Rivera Rosales, also known as “El Robert” or “El Güero Batacas”, alleged leader of the criminal group responsible for the homicide, as well as his accomplices Erick “N”, son of El Robert, and Sergio “N”, known as “El Checo”, all of them involved in the homicide.
During the press conference on May 2nd, the prosecutor stated that since the time of the crime, the State Investigation Agency (AEI) began a thorough preliminary investigation, involving significant intelligence work and the execution of various procedures.
Andrade Ramirez highlighted that “the investigation remains open in order to possibly link more parties involved in it” and emphasized the significant progress thanks to the strategy and coordinated work between the Public Ministries and the AEI agents.
The AEI extended its investigative work to San Quintín, in addition to the actions developed in Tijuana, with the aim of gathering more evidence that would contribute to the resolution of the case. At least five raids were carried out in various properties and crucial testimonies and interviews were collected to advance the investigation.
Among the most prominent evidence found at the crime scenes was a GPS device, a key element for solving the case, which was placed in the official’s vehicle to track him.
The attorney general explained in detail how the deployment of coordinated police actions and the incessant work of state investigators and prosecutors in the case resulted in the location and arrest of the suspects. “The detention of these individuals was made possible thanks to a thorough investigation,” said Andrade Ramirez, who added that the joint effort between the different branches of the justice system was crucial for this success.
The murder of the official was recorded at around 8:30 p.m. on Friday, October 13th, 2023. Reports indicate that Martínez was attacked while arriving at his home, located in the Presidentes neighborhood, when a group of armed men intercepted him and started shooting at him.
According to the intelligence reports from the Baja California Security Council, those who ordered the death of Mario Martínez were Los Oaxacos, led by José Luis Herrera Oliveiro, also known as El Gallo, and another individual nicknamed El Sierra, who operate in San Quintín.
“Those who carried out the homicide belong to a different cell; however, they all operate in Baja California for Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada,” reported journalist Rosario Mosso from Zeta Tijuana.
It was reported that the arrest of these people was due to an anonymous complaint and other evidence that directly implicated them. In other words, a rival provided the information.
At the State Prosecutor’s conference on May 2nd, the prosecution stated that following the search of five residences linked to the murder, they were able to obtain at least ten pieces of evidence that solidify the accusation and reinforce that the main line of investigation is the operations and compliance with duty of career police officer Martinez, who had a long history in Tijuana’s security system.
