A 58-year-old Mexican man was arrested by agents from the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) after a shipment of cocaine worth more than $700,000 was found inside his vehicle. He attempted to cross into the United States through the Hidalgo, Phar, and Anzalduas border bridges.

According to a statement from the CBP, the detention and seizure occurred on April 25th, when an officer stopped the driver of a Dodge vehicle for a secondary non-intrusive inspection with the assistance of specialized canine teams trained in identifying narcotics.

Carlos Rodríguez, director of the border port, indicated that upon inspecting the contents of the car, they noticed the presence of 24 packages containing a total of 57 pounds (around 26 kilograms) of a white powder with characteristics similar to cocaine.

Regarding the value of the insured cargo, CBP estimated it could reach $761,803 in the illegal market of the United States.

As part of the efforts of the United States authorities to combat drug trafficking, Michael W. Humphries, Director of Customs and Border Protection, highlighted the seizure of four drug shipments at the checkpoints in Nogales, Arizona.

On April 18th, 358,425 fentanyl pills were seized, hidden in the doors of a vehicle. On the same day, the discovery of 7.4 kilograms of cocaine inside a box and several paint cans in the trunk of another car was documented.

On April 24th, immigration agents reported the seizure of 362,025 fentanyl pills. Finally, on the 25th, 274,500 opioid pills, 2.2 kilograms of powdered fentanyl, and approximately 10 kilograms of methamphetamines were confiscated. The drugs were hidden in doors, false panels, and under the car seats.

This week, drug seizures were located along the border, from the border crossing of Hidalgo in Tamaulipas to the seizure of 50 kilograms of fentanyl pills from a “blind mule” in Tijuana, Baja California.

It is worth remembering that on April 28th, Tijuana Municipal Police officers responded to a report from a citizen who reported anomalies with the spare tire of his truck, which had been stolen three weeks earlier and “appeared” with blue pills placed on it.

Upon the arrival of the authorities, they confirmed that the pills had the characteristics of fentanyl, with a total weight of 54.23 kilograms. These were the same pills that the drug lord in the city intended to recover once the citizen and the vehicle crossed the border into the United States.

It is important to note that the case of “blind mules” is mainly victims of residents of the border area who cross the border daily to work, for studies, or to make various purchases or other activities. Therefore, they usually have daily routines to travel to the same places and at the exact times, which is exploited by drug trafficking to hide drugs in their cars with locators, which are recovered once they cross the checkpoints monitored by the CBP.
