Two days after the escape of a prisoner who was serving a sentence at the Nogales Social Rehabilitation Center (CERESO), authorities in Sonora were able to identify the man who managed to evade them.
It was Saturday morning, April 6, when it was discovered that one of the inmates was not present in the facility. When the prison staff carried out roll call, as done every day, they realized that one inmate was not present.
Therefore, an operation was carried out inside the CERESO to locate the man in question, but it did not yield any positive results. As of Monday, the prisoner has not been located by the state police, so his current whereabouts are unknown.
According to reports from the Sonora State Attorney General’s Office (FGJES), the escaped prisoner is named Kevin Jorge Jesús Romero Corvera, who had been incarcerated at the Nogales CERESO since October 2020.
Faced with this situation, the state prosecutor’s office notified neighboring states such as Chihuahua, Sinaloa, and Baja California about what had happened in order to be on alert for the possible location of the perpetrator. Since Sonora is on the northern border, the government of the United States (US) was also notified about the incident.
“Immediately, legal action was taken to obtain an arrest warrant and an operation was initiated for their recapture, in which, in addition to field actions, authorities in neighboring states and the United States of America were notified, as well as federal agencies, in order to increase the scope of the search,” it was reported.
In the same way, the state prosecutor’s office opened an investigation to clarify the events and determine if there were any potential individuals involved in the escape. As for the crime for which Romero Corvera was serving a sentence at the Nogales prison, no further information was provided.
Unofficial reports indicate that the inmate had been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the crime of homicide, but this has not been confirmed by Sonoran authorities.
On the afternoon of Sunday, April 7th, a road accident was registered on the Hermosillo-Ures stretch of highway. It was reported that two vehicles (a 2024 Jeep Patriot and a 1999 Nissan sedan) collided at kilometer 33.
In the sedan vehicle traveled a woman identified as Clarissa de Jesús “N”, 36 years old, accompanied by six minors aged 12, 11 and 10 years old. The other unit was only operated by María “N”, a 21-year-old woman.
After the head-on collision, Clarissa lost her life at the scene of the accident. The rest of the passengers were taken to a hospital in Hermosillo for medical treatment. However, two of the minors (aged 10 and 11) also passed away due to the severity of their injuries.
For these events, the state prosecutor’s office initiated an investigation to determine the “mechanics of the events” and clarify how the traffic accident occurred. This is in order to determine the corresponding responsibilities.
